The second Dover Darts
Open was held at the Whitfield Club on Saturday the 7th
November, with a strong field of 82 from all over Kent
trying to take the title. The eventual winner was Steve
Douglas from the Medway towns who beat Paul Dawkins from
Thanet.
Both players had tough
routes to the final. In the first round Steve Douglas
played Alan Humphries 3-0 and then promptly went on to beat
Dover League player Kieran Dodd by same margin.
Steve was well and truly
in the groove, winning his next match 3-0 to reach the
quarter finals. The format changed to best of seven legs
and still Steve won without dropping a leg again, beating
Nigel Gregory of Folkestone 4-0.
Semi finals moved to best
of nine and Steve played Kent player and Dover league player
Jim Penman 5-2 in a superb game of darts.
Paul “Dolly” Dawkins beat
youth player Scott Artiss 3-1 in the first round and then
beat Alan Francombe 3-0.
Jason Wilson was next for
Dolly, and he won a tight affair 3-2 to set up a last 16 tie
against Ross Lowe of Deal. He ran out 3-0 winner and went
on to play Chris Collins, Paul was 3-1 up and went on to win
the final leg of the match in 11 darts, a leg that included
two 180’s at the start.
Mick Norris was next up
for Paul, his super league team mate for the Herne Bay
Stingrays. In a brilliant game Dolly won 5-0 in a high
scoring and clinical finishing match.
In the final Paul started
like a train, taking his semi final form with him he won the
first four legs. Steve Douglas then went on to completely
change the tide of the match, winning the next six legs on
the bounce to claim the title and the £500 winner’s cash
prize. Steve and Paul received their prize money and
trophies from Paul Brisley of S&P Brisley who were a board
and trophy sponsor of the event.
