Gordon Speakman and Derek
“Delboy” Palmer from the Bull A were victorious in the 2009
Dover Invitation Darts League Pairs, beating Tony Brown and
Brian Pearce of the Diamond in the final.
A super strong field that
had 38 pairs competing for the new improved prize fund
battled it out at the Archer, with Landlord Andy Brind
contributing to the nights winnings.
Gordon and Del’s first
round opponents were Anthony Biggs and Emma Higgs of the
Priory Hotel from Division Four, who they beat 2-0 before
then moving on to beat Tommy and Chris Wayte of the Boars
Head B by the same margin.
In the quarter finals the
format changed to the best of five legs, but still Gordon
and Del continued to win without dropping a leg, with a 3-0
win against Dave Wallace and Steve “Ginge” Habbershaw from
the Real Diamonds.
In the semi final they
played Billy Bell and Dave Green who rolled back the years
on the night to play some cracking darts, however the high
scoring and sharp finishing on the night from the eventual
winners was too strong, and they won 3-1. This was the only
leg the pair lost all night.
Their opponents in the
final, Tony Brown and Brian Pearce had a real tough section
of the draw to battle through.
A first round match
against Paul Perkins and Mark Clayton of the Red Lion
resulted in a 2-0 victory to set up a second round game
against Mat James & Donna Bailey. They won comfortably by
the same margin to move on to the quarter finals against
Steve Terry and Stuart Haynes of the Bricklayers. The match
was a real yo-yo match, which ended with a high scoring
final leg from Brown and Pearce, who won 3-2.
Their next opponents, Jim
Penman and Peter “Tucker” Fry were just as stubborn, and
another tight game ended in a 3-2 win to set up the final.
In the final itself, true
to form on the night, Gordon Speakman and Derek Palmer were
on the ball with their finishing. Gordon set the tone
taking out 111 in the first leg, treble twenty, single 11
and double top.
The second leg was full of
good consistent darts by both pairs, with the clinical
finishing being the difference again, Speakman and Palmer
went 2-0 up. Soon after the final was all over, Del Plamer
took out 48 in two darts to take the final 3-0.
